Intent
Reading lies at the heart of the curriculum at Oaksey. We are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become lifelong readers and we believe reading is key for academic success. We want all children to experience the thrill of ‘falling into a book’, and encourage them to read for pleasure, meaning and learning. We are committed to giving children opportunities to read across our curriculum.
Phonics
At Oaksey we use the synthetics phonics program 'Little Wandle Letters and Sounds' to deliver our teaching of early reading.
Children take part in daily phonics sessions, reading sessions three times a week and daily catch-up sessions to ensure that they do not fall behind.
Your child will bring home an online reading book which is fully decodable and matches the text that they have been reading in school. In addition to this they will also have a 'sharing book' to read with you to help develop their love of reading and knowledge of wider texts. We encourage you to read both books with your child to help them develop a well rounded approach to their reading.
